Excerpt from History of Gilmanton and Factory Village written in 1844

May none of us this history spurn,
For we may from it a lesson learn;
Of time's swift flight, and of changes great,
That we are passing to a future state.

We see one age rapidly pass away, and it may be said almost in a day.
One generation goes, another comes; And sets at noon earth's fairest suns.

May we improvement in the future make,
That we the place of good men take,
Their virtues know and follow sure.
Despite the bad and learn the pure.

Written by Mrs. Well's in 1884 at age 15 years. Read at the Old Home Day Celebration and published in the school paper called the Vernal Bud printed on April 10, 1844.
